Cateri has been occupied since prehistoric times. At the Carco Mondria site, traces of dwellings, a flat stone and some standing stones can be seen. Further on, at the San-Cesario pass, Roman remains have been found near the polychrome chapel. The village is built on a slope above terraced fields. The baroque parish church of Santa-Lucia, also known as Notre-Dame des Anges, is the only one in Corsica to feature an arcaded absidal bell tower. The Convent of Marcassu, Corsica's oldest surviving convent, houses the ashes of Saint Bernardin, a native of Calenzana.
