This commune is the 2nd largest in Corsica by its surface area. It has a seaboard with sixteen kilometres of coastline, with the only pebble beach in Argentella. The place takes its name from the old silver and copper mines which were exploited from 1873 to 1930. The village is under the protection of Saint Restitute who, according to legend, chose the location of the chapel that bears her name. It was erected in the 12th century on the spot where the saint and her companions would have been buried after their martyrdom. Her cult is celebrated on 21 May, and her relics are carried in procession through the village.
