This is a recent commune, created in 1972 by the merger of the hamlets of Montemaggiore, Lunghignano and Cassano. However, the area was already inhabited in ancient times. A necropolis dating back to the 4th century has been found not far from Lunghignano. In Montemaggiore, you can visit the 12th-century Pisan church of Saint-Rainier. Its ornamentation is enigmatic: some sculptures depict footprints and faces, with no apparent link to the religious iconography of the time. The ruins of a Pisan necropolis and chapel can still be seen at San-Martino. This sacred site is believed to be the last remnants of a Moorish town!
