Situated on an ancient Celtic road leading from the Alsace plain to the Vosges mountains, Herrlisheim was first mentioned in the 8th century under the name Herleichesheim, then Herrlichesheim, a Germanic term that translates as "charming place". For over two centuries, the village belonged to the lords of Hattstatt, before coming under the control of the barons of Schauenbourg. Among the village's historic structures are the 15th-century Saint-Michel church, the Tour des Voleurs (1370) and the Waschbach, a beautifully restored former washhouse. An unusual detail: Herrlisheim's emblem is a frog, an amphibian that is also the nickname of its inhabitants!
