This beautiful town owes its origin to an abbey of Benedictine nuns founded in 1006 by the parents of Pope Leo IX. At the beginning of the 13th century, the convent and the village were surrounded by walls, anticipating the construction of the Burg, a proud castle surrounded by a moat. Sainte-Croix-en-Plaine thus became a fortified town, of which some remains remain harmoniously integrated into the current configuration of the locality. St Bartholomew's Church is remarkable for its Romanesque foundations, while the upper part of its bell tower dates from 1700. It contains a magnificent Callinet organ dating from 1840, lovingly restored in 2018.
