Artefacts found here attest to a Gallic and Roman presence. In the 13th century, the village of Hergheim was split in two. At that time, it belonged to the abbey of Murbach, and later to the Habsburg seigneury. It was eventually granted to the nobles of Hattstatt, who sold it to Mr. Klinglin. In 1478, Guillaume de Ribeaupierre had 30 villagers imprisoned and demanded a ransom. In 1585, the estate passed to the Schauenbourg family, who built a castle considered one of the most beautiful in Alsace. The Germans set up an airplane parts workshop before the village was liberated in February 1945.
