First mentioned in the 13th century, Munwiller must have existed long before then, as a Merovingian sarcophagus has been discovered here. The village was first owned by the bishops of Strasbourg, then by the Habsburgs from 1269 to 1648. In 1763, it became the property of the Klinglin family. At the end of the 18th century, it became part of the bailliage of Ollwiller. In 1819, a multi-purpose building (school, town hall, presbytery) was erected in the village center. During the First World War, Munwiller welcomed people from neighboring villages seeking to escape the fighting. During the Occupation, it served as headquarters for German troops.
