The large city in western Sardinia has only 32,000 inhabitants and radiates a convincing charm. Its ancient neoclassical palaces built by the Spanish, its medieval towers reminiscent of the period of the Judicats, its churches, its first-rate archaeological museum, its large, lively beach and its affordable hotels make it a choice tourist stop. It comes alive at carnival time in February when a medieval horse race is held with 120 riders. Oristano is a good base for exploring the Sinis peninsula with its beautiful beaches or for exploring the ancient town of Tharros.
