The small town of less than 5,000 inhabitants stands proudly on the Abbasanta plateau. It is almost twinned with the neighbouring town of the same name. The town has no particular attractions, except for the house of Antonio Gramsci. The famous Sardinian writer and communist ideologist continues to attract visitors on a pilgrimage. The oldest houses are of black basalt. The masons of Ghilarza have a unique know-how in working with this stone, which has taken some of them all over the world. The tourist office is located at 95 via Matteotti (✆ +39 333 621 5050) and is open in high season.
