Nestled in a meander of the Cedrino River, slightly set back from the sea, the city of Orosei gave its name to the famous gulf on the northeast coast of Sardinia. Historical capital of the Barony, Orosei was an important center of trade and commerce in the Middle Ages and the 15th century. It had 900 inhabitants and was then the richest city in the Gallura region. The city center of Orosei, typically Mediterranean, is rich in narrow streets, flowered squares, old houses; rich also in churches, since the city counts no less than eighteen of them. Orosei is located in a natural setting of great beauty, between the lagoon formed by the mouth of the Cedrino River ("Tzedrinu" in Sardinian), and the long, peaceful beach of Marina di Orosei. The coves of Cala Liberotto, Cala Ginepro and Cala Sa Curcurica are attractive with their crystal clear waters and rocky bottoms. A little further north of Orosei is the Bidderosa reserve, which can be discovered by hiking. Orosei is also the ideal starting point to visit the inland regions of Barbagia, Supramonte and Ogliastra.
