Iglesias has always been very popular because of the richness of its metalliferous basin. The Pisans called it Argentaria, in reference to the surrounding silver mines. Its other wealth is its churches, so numerous that they earned it the nickname of "city of churches" in the Middle Ages. Among the churches, the Cathedral of Santa Chiara (13th century), the Madonna delle Grazie, the church of the Collegio, "temple" of the Jesuits, and San Francesco, one of the most intact and significant Gothic-Catalan architectures of Sardinia, which preserves an altarpiece of 1560, are worth a visit. It is also necessary to point out the ruins of San Salvatore, one of the rare cruciform Byzantine buildings (IX-XI centuries). From Iglesias, the Santa Barbara mining route starts: 400 kilometers in 24 stages, to be covered on foot or by mountain bike, to discover the history and devotion of the Sulcis. In mid-August the medieval historical procession is another tradition to be experienced: musicians, flag throwers and extras in medieval costumes parade through the historic districts.Although the city's exterior is not very appealing, we highly recommend stopping by for a morning and taking a stroll through its many picturesque streets and medieval downtown. And then, if you like umbrellas...Iglesias is connected to Cagliari by train and busno. 801. It takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the mode of transport chosen.
