The village of Santa Brigida, named Satautey "palm valley", by the Guanches aborigines, has a very cute little church and a vegetable market on Saturdays from to: the caldera of Bandama (caldera means boiler). The large village of Vega de San Mateo (called San Mateo) has a strong agricultural tradition. Its Sunday market attracts people from all over the island seeking quality fresh products.Caldera de Bandama. Not far from Santa Brigida, a small road leads to the main volcanic site of Gran Canaria. This circular crater, 1 km in diameter and more than 200 m deep, is due to a violent explosion that occurred during a "magma hydro" eruption, bringing the lava and water of a lake, river or water table into contact. The Bandama caldera is a typical example. We have the best views from the peak of Bandama, 575 m high, and the small road that leads there. A trail goes down to the bottom of the crater, where it is surprising to see the buildings isolated from a farm, still active. On the southern edge of the caldera, the green lawns of a renowned golf course contrast with the drought of the crater.La Atalaya. Nearby, the hamlet of La Atalaya is renowned for its pottery made according to the recessive techniques. A former cave village, it still has some houses in the rock.
