Capital of the island and of the province which includes the islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, it is a modern and cosmopolitan city which rises up to 200 m above sea level and spreads out around its port. Sheltered at the bottom of a small cove at the foot of the Anaga massif. It does not have the charm of the more traditional towns, but it is nevertheless pleasant, with its brightly coloured buildings, its seafront and its municipal park. A young and lively city, it is also the most important commercial centre on the island. It is also one of the cultural centres of the island, with a museum of contemporary art and the Adán Martín auditorium, which has a silhouette reminiscent of Sydney.
