It is the main town in the northwest of the island and the former capital of the pre-Hispanic period. The city where the Guanartemes lived, kings of the Guanches. It lies at the foot of a small 434-metre high volcano and has a pleasant and lively historic centre with some typical buildings such as the neoclassical church of Santiago de Gáldar. But its main interest lies in its extraordinary archaeological park, the Cueva Pintada, "the painted cave", a rock art area that is worth a visit in itself. If you come here on Thursdays, you can also take advantage of the small market held in the centre in the mornings.
