It is the second city of Gran Canaria and was the capital of one of the two Aboriginal kingdoms that shared the island before the conquest. The neighbourhoods of San Francisco and San Juan retain a typical appearance and the church of San Juan Bautista with its Moorish-Gothic façade is worthy of note. 4 km to the south, the montaña of Cuatro Puertas is home to one of the most important archaeological remains from the pre-Hispanic period: a cave carved into the mountain where the Tagororor was celebrated, a council that brought together the guayres, the local chiefs. On the north side of the mountain there is an impressive group of natural caves that served as a habitat.
