With almost 19,000 ha, it is the largest and oldest of the Canary Islands' national parks. Created in 1954, it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is bordered by a forest crown of Canary pine trees growing on the edge of the Caldera de Las Cañadas. The interest is not only volcanological, but also botanical: the altitude reduces the number of plant species to fifty-seven in this area, but fifteen are characteristic of the Canary Islands, twenty more from Tenerife alone, and eleven more from the only protected area. In order to preserve this unique biodiversity in the world, nothing is picked or collected.
