The first inhabited site on the island of Pico, Lajes was probably discovered in 1460 and soon became a fishing and trading port, although the latter role was soon challenged by Madalena and, more recently, by São Roque. But Lajes soon became famous for its whaling. Today, the small town is a quiet stopover, full of memories of the old whaling days. The American influence is still strongly felt here, even more so than in Terceira. The magnificent Festa dos Baleeiros, held in the last week of August, is an opportunity to admire the botes in a very peaceful action: the race.
