Madalena is Pico's main town. An ancient little port, a beautiful church defying the ocean and a quiet town with picturesque streets, behind which rises the imposing silhouette of Mount Pico. From the 15th century onwards, the fertile soils here have enabled vines to be cultivated, producing a mineral wine of the highest quality, unique in the world not only for its grape varieties but also for the way it is grown. Imposed by the sea, the wind and the Atlantic climate, the vines here are grown right on the ground between low walls of lava stone, creating unique landscapes that are classified as Unesco World Heritage sites.
