A beautiful little village where Captain Anselmo fitted out the first Azorean boat to hunt sperm whales. Whaleboats are still repaired in the port for regattas. This has become a very popular activity on the island of Pico, especially from June to September, when crowds flock to attend. Calheta de Nesquim is also the starting point for the PRC11 PIC signposted hiking trail (9 km - 3h - medium difficulty). For the exact itinerary, contact the nearest tourist office (Lajes) or visit the official Azores hiking website - trails.visitazores.com - which is updated daily.
