Over the centuries, this small village has been the Azores' main shipyard, as evidenced by its former Shipbuilding Museum. It was here that, using ancient construction techniques and twisted, misshapen timbers, seafaring craftsmen built elegant boats, speedboats, fishing vessels and passenger ships. This is also where most of the Azores' whaleboats were built. Witnesses to this glorious past, these multicolored boats still set sail in spring, here and on neighboring islands, to compete in impressive regattas.
