On Terceira's south coast, Angra do Heroísmo is the island's capital, with a population of around 35,000. The representative of the Portuguese state, the Minister of the Republic, resides here, and it was twice chosen as the city of exile for the Portuguese government: once between 1580 and 1582, and again between 1830 and 1833 during the Portuguese Civil War. It was also the archipelago's capital between 1766 and 1832. Gaspar Frutuoso compared Angra, in his sum Saudades da Terra, to "a little Lisbon", for the abundance of things found and sold there. Today, however, the city will seem quiet to anyone familiar with the Lusitanian capital.
