The port of Manadas was marked by a lookout hut, built in 1647, to watch over navigation on the São Jorge Canal. During the era of piracy, the inhabitants used to suspend alleged pirates from this viewpoint to warn pirates or privateers of the consequences of an attack on the village. During the Orange Cycle (an economic period when local farmers produced citrus fruits for export), the lookout was used to warn of the arrival of cargo ships. Later, the port was also used as a transit port for exports of Castelete wines to the European continent and England
