Travel Guide Caldeira

Caldeira is a volcanic cone of perfect proportions, dominating the whole island. Its crater is home to the fauna endemic to Faial and the archipelago. It's possible to descend the crater with a certified guide - just ask at the Horta tourist office. Alternatively, a beautiful hiking trail (signposted PRC4 FAI - 6.8 km - 2h30 - easy) takes you all the way around. When the weather's fine, the view of Pico and São Jorge is breathtaking. A mirador offers a beautiful view of the interior. To get there, simply cross the short tunnel to a belvedere overlooking the crater. It's a magical and absolutely magnificent place.
