It is the emblematic place of the island. Capelinhos is a volcano that emerged a little over 60 years ago in Faial, revealing a lunar landscape, grandiose. The old lighthouse and some houses destroyed by the eruption accentuate the dramatic character of a landscape truly unique to the Azores. The peninsula of Capelo was formed by lava flows from different volcanoes perfectly aligned. Capelinhos is the last volcano of this alignment, a volcano that rose from the earth in one year, between 1957 and 1958. Here you can find the Volcano Interpretation Center, which explains the history of volcanoes and the birth of Capelinhos.
