The Furnas do Enxofre are one of the Azores' active volcanic formations. The site is well signposted from the main road. You can drive along a dirt track to a parking area. From here, a small, well-maintained path leads around the fumaroles. The place is a bit fantastical, with volutes swirling in lunar silence, in the middle of nowhere. The grass is yellowed, almost brown in places due to the gas fumes. A fifteen-minute walk around the fumaroles, more or less intense depending on the day, will allow you to appreciate the site.
