Santa Cruz, on the island's northeast coast, is Graciosa's small capital. This is where the airport is based and where most of the island's businesses are concentrated. Over the centuries, Santa Cruz has been visited by important travelers. The Jesuit António Vieira; later, the French writer Chateaubriand; in 1814, the young Almeida Garrett wrote some of his first verses here; finally, in 1879, Prince Albert of Monaco visited Furna do Enxofre. You can stay here to explore the rest of Graciosa: you can reach the south-eastern end, Carapacho, in around twenty minutes by car. Right next to the center are some superb natural swimming pools.
