Carapacho, a small village in the extreme south-east of Graciosa, has prided itself on its thermal waters, whose benefits have been known since 1750. Its thermal baths were built on the seafront in 1860. If the exterior wasn't very engaging, it's much better since the renovation that took place between 2016 and 2018. Today, a clean, white building awaits you. Once inside, you'll probably be delighted to relax in a warm bath filled with mineral-rich water, including magnesium, chloride and sodium. If you prefer a more temperate temperature, Carapacho is also known for its beautiful natural pools, located just below the thermal baths. One of the pools is enclosed, protected from the waves and current, and can even be enjoyed in winter if you don't mind the cold water. The second, open to the sea, is set between basalt rocks. A popular spot in summer, it's a great place to relax. An area is provided for sunbathing.Overlooking the ocean, the Carapacho lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the Graciosa headland and the island of Baixo. On a clear day, you can see São Jorge, Pico and Faial in the background. There's even a whale-watching lookout! Take care, however, as the road to get there is not paved and is two-way despite being a single-lane road. It's the ideal place to contemplate a magnificent sunrise!
