From Santa Cruz, Ponta da Barca is reached via a flat seafront road that winds through landscapes shaped by lava. As in Pico, you'll find vineyards lined with low, squared-off walls. At the end of Ponta da Barca, 500 m north of Ponta Negra, where it was originally intended to be built, stands the Farol da Ponta da Barca. While the building itself is well worth a visit, its surroundings are equally beautiful. Overlooking a small bay of red rocks with transparent waters, it offers a breathtaking view of the "whale", a surprising basalt formation.
