The first settlers arrived here in 1482, it is one of the oldest villages on the island and its church is one of the richest and most majestic on Pico. Its fertile soils and different microclimates have enabled man to cultivate vines and orchards. Today, its small port is dedicated solely to fishing, but was once closely linked to whaling. Old whaleboats can still be seen here, as can the Casa dos botes, where these magnificent boats were stored until they were ready to set sail, when the lookout signal announced a sperm whale.
