Home to the air base that played a key role in anti-submarine warfare during the Second World War, Lajes forms part of NATO's defensive system. More recently, on March 17, 2003, the leaders of the United States, George W. Bush, Great Britain, Tony Blair, and Spain, José María Aznar, took part in a decisive summit on the Iraq crisis at the Lajes site. The base is of course off-limits to the public. Lajes is also home to Terceira's airport. The area is not worth a visit, so it's best to take your rental car and head straight for Angra.
