With a population of 2,000, Largentière is France's smallest sub-prefecture. Its name derives from the silver-lead mines that were exploited here from the 10th to the 15th century by the Counts of Toulouse and the Bishops of Viviers. Largentière was highly coveted at the time, which explains the presence of numerous defensive castles and fortified villages in the surrounding area. The old town boasts many fine features: the 13th-century Porte des Récollets, a vestige of the old ramparts, the 13th-century Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers church, and numerous medieval and Renaissance-style houses and townhouses.
