Perched high above the Volane, Bise and Mas valleys, Antraigues has managed to resist the pressure of tourism. The walls, steeped in history, gaze out at you through the faces of the lava stone sculptures that adorn the narrow streets around the church. From the square, a winding path leads you to the cheese rock (a volcanic neck) or to the chapel of Saint-Roch. Antraigues is also the final resting place of Jean Ferrat (1930-2010), the famous poet, songwriter and singer who settled here in 1964. The surrounding landscape is said to have inspired his song La Montagne. Since 2011, an annual Jean Ferrat festival has been held in July.
