Gordes was a stronghold of the Vordenses, a Celto-Ligurian tribe that gave it its name with the custom of transforming the initial V into a G (Gordenses) in Gallo-Roman times. Ranked among the "most beautiful villages in France", it has the particularity of seducing artists and celebrities of all kinds. He's kind of the "star" of the region. Housed on the hillsides, it dominates the entire Calavon valley, surrounded by dry-stone houses around this rock where the village rests with, at its summit, the church and the Renaissance castle defying the surrounding hills. Its little alleys are cobbled lanes. They weave their way through the high houses where you can discover vaults, old doors, terraces and gardens. It is in summer one of the most visited tourist places in the department.
