Located in the Chevreuse valley, the commune was founded in the 10th century, by royal decree of Hugues Capet. Its name derives from essartage - the clearing of the Yvelines forest by the Capetian kings. In 1203, the territory was ceded to the Duchy of Brittany by Philippe Auguste, making it dependent on the Lords of Monfort. Referred to as Les Essarts-les-Bois during the French Revolution, the commune took on its full name of Essarts-le-Roi in 1814, following the absorption of Layes. It comprises five hamlets: Saint-Hubert, les Layes, la Tasse, la Rue Vert and la Massicoterie, combining rural charm with urban dynamism.
