Although the first traces of Grosrouvre date back only to 768, in a donation from Pepin le Bref to the Abbey of Saint-Denis, the village was occupied as early as the Palaeolithic. This is borne out by the various flint tools found on its territory. The village's name comes from the Latin Grossum and Robur - the larger-than-average sessile oak. The commune's main hamlets are Les Aubris, La Surie, Le Chêne-Rogneux, La Troche, Les Haizettes and Le Buisson, as well as a dozen other villages. To the south, Château de la Mormaire, built in the 17th century, is now owned by François Pinault.
