The name Garancières has Germanic origins and was formerly known as "Warenceras", which was transformed in the Middle Ages by substituting the W with a G. The name also refers to madder, a plant from which a red dye was once obtained. The first written record of Garancières appears in the 9th century, when the village belonged to the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. At the end of the 9th century, Garancières became part of the county of Montfort, and was part of the marches of the kingdom of France until its definitive attachment to the crown through the marriage of Anne de Bretagne, Countess of Montfort, to Charles VIII.
