In the south of Corsica-du-Sud, this port-citadel has its eyes in the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky. It is the Genoese who built this fortress in 1539 on a vast pink rock, on a wide gulf, to develop the plain and export goods to their own city. However, in spite of this privileged situation and a fertile hinterland, the site turns out to be a malaria area and a real nest of pirates. From 1540 to 1589, the citadel was destroyed and then rebuilt three times. The Republic of Genoa finally ceded the island to France in 1768. One year later, the troops of King Louis XV took possession of the "Bastion de France", a fortified area of 3 hectares.
Today, the city offers us its heritage such as the Castellu d'Araggio, its beaches - Palombaggia of sand lined with pine trees or Santa Giulia with its lagoon-like appearance -, its landscapes and its craft skills. Here you will discover a "road of the senses", from producers and craftsmen markets to gourmet visits and tastings. On the menu: wines, charcuterie, olive oils, farm cheeses, local fishing, aromatic plants... In summer, it's a party in Porto-Vecchio with polyphonic concerts, open-air theater, exhibitions, traditional festivals... Every year, A Festa di a San Ghjuvà marks the beginning of the festivities. Here the sportsmen are also in the festival around the nautical activities or of full nature. Finally, this destination is a delight for shopping enthusiasts. When to go to Porto-Vecchio ? If the crowd of tourists is too much for you, avoid the very touristy season, from the beginning of July to the end of August. Especially since the climate is pleasant from April to November, and the great weather is guaranteed from May-June to mid-September. In spring, the maquis is in bloom. An enchantment. In autumn, the forest is ablaze with colors, chestnuts and mushrooms to be picked. The season is propitious for a morning of fishing in the heart of the Marine Park, for the discovery of the coastal path of the Rondinara, for the practice of stand-up paddle in the bay of Santa Giulia. It's also an opportunity to try sailing or kitesurfing and learn how to defy the winds. And why not come in winter in low season? Porto-Vecchio is the ideal destination for a winter change of scenery punctuated by walks on the beach and forays into the mountains around good local restaurants. You can take advantage of the mild temperatures to stroll around the market and discover the island's specialties. In December, the city lights up around the Christmas animations in a warm and festive atmosphere: ice rink, shows, culinary workshops, fireworks, gastronomic evenings, polyphonic concerts... And see you on June 23 on the church square to jump the fire of Saint John and pay tribute to San Ghjuvanni Battista, patron saint of the Porto-Vecchiais. Finally, you should know that the average temperature of the sea is 15°C in winter and 25°C in summer.
Like the rest of Corsica, Porto-Vecchio enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with a southern latitude, pleasant all year round and 300 days of sunshine per year and an average temperature ranging from 15.5°C in winter to 28°C in summer. On the coast, maximum temperatures average 26°C in September, 21°C in October and 17°C in November. Spring is pleasant: 17°C in April and 25°C in June. Sometimes the Mistral wind blows and violent thunderstorms occur.
