The origin of the village's name comes from the German Sultz (salt) and Matt (meadow), in reference to the salt that makes up the famous local waters. This is the origin of the Lisbeth waters, drawn from the Soultzmatt springs. The many 16th- and 18th-century buildings, with courtyards enclosed by magnificent carriage gates, bear witness to a winegrowing past. A wine trail starting behind the town hall takes you on a 2-hour walk through the Zinkoepflé massif, classified as a Grand Cru. These are the highest vineyards in Alsace, at an altitude of 400 metres. The church, dedicated to Saint Sebastian since 1309, has three basilica-style naves.
