Buxy, land of the Counts of Chalon, retains the remains of its ramparts, including the 12th-century Tour Rouge, the village's landmark. After King Louis XI annexed Burgundy in 1477, the dukes' governors were replaced by royal judges and guards until the French Revolution. The town is worth a visit for its small medieval center, including its church. The canton of Buxy is also famous for its "Buxy" brown stone, used in palaces the world over. On the wine-growing side, Buxy is one of the communes of the Montagny appellation, spread over four communes. France's first greenway also passes through here.
