Known to tourists for its airport, Keflavik is part of the Reykjanesbær agglomeration, the largest on the peninsula. Most services and industries are concentrated here. In the north, around the harbour, the small city centre is animated by shops and coloured by pretty small wooden or tin houses. To the south, vast suburbs surround large surfaces and innumerable drive-ins, recalling the presence of many American soldiers until 2006. The set of sad buildings forming the former base has now become a residential and hotel area. It can be interesting to stop there before leaving.
