It's the island's second-largest town, and as such boasts a number of well-stocked accommodation and restaurant outlets. There's not much to see, but the atmosphere is not unpleasant. You could always take a look at the parish church of Santa Catarina, built in the 17th century, or the Francisco de Lacerda museum, to learn more about this famous local musician, or the history of Azorean emigration. The little port (Largo do Cais), with its air of the last century, is charming. The four days of music, sport and ethnography at the July festival (second half of the month) are also worth mentioning.
