The legend says that Hercules, in love with the nymph Amalfi, who died prematurely, decided to dedicate the city to her, which he built. The history evokes rather a Roman foundation in the VIth century. The first maritime republic of the Italian peninsula, Amalfi became an essential hub of trade between East and West throughout the Middle Ages. The birthplace of Flavio Gioia, inventor of the compass, it was also here that the maritime code known as the Tabula de Amalpha (the Amalfi Tables) was born, which would govern navigation in the Mediterranean for centuries. It competed with Genoa, Pisa and Venice. Rich and powerful, Amalfi was equipped with remarkable buildings under the impulse of its governors. It is necessary to quickly leave the main street to get lost in the small labyrinth of stairways and vaulted passages.
