Campi Flegrei in Italian ("ardents fields"). Territory of volcanic origin located west of Naples between Cape Misène and Cuma. The area with its low, very fertile hills covered with vegetation and interspersed with small lakes is developed by secondary volcanic phenomena. Fumaroles (gas or vapour emissions) and solfatares (emissions of water and sulphur vapour) still wave the basement. During antiquity, the richness of the cities of Cuma, Pozzuoli and Misène gives rise to enthusiasm among Roman aristocrats and notables. Villas and other large buildings still bear witness to the region's flourishing past.
