Founded in the 6th century B.C. by the Greeks, Pozzuoli was able to take full advantage of its strategic access to the sea. Its port became an important commercial crossroads with Sicily, Africa and the Orient. Iron, glass, dyes and perfumes were traded at the time. Pozzuoli came under Roman rule in the 3rd century BC. Under the Emperors Nero and Vespasian, its development accelerated. From the 1st century onwards, the city was equipped with a superb amphitheatre (69-79 AD), public baths, fountains, temples, a stadium and markets. In the5th century, however, the barbarian invasions heralded the decline of a city that was also subject to unpredictable bradyseism - a phenomenon of subsidence and uplift of the earth, linked to underground volcanic activity. Naples then welcomed many of its inhabitants. Today, Pozzuoli is a lively town with a pleasant little pedestrian centre.
