Revered, feared and admired, Vesuvius plays an essential role in the landscape and history of Campania. The eruption of 79 AD is certainly the most famous natural disaster of antiquity, but paradoxically it also brought great joy to archaeologists, who uncovered Roman cities that had been frozen in ash for almost 2,000 years. With its two peaks, culminating at 1,281 m and 1,149 m respectively, and its single crater, the volcano is no choirboy. Despite a semblance of appeasement, it continues to work relentlessly underground and is therefore closely monitored. A visit is not to be missed.
