A resplendent city in ancient times, Capua is now a provincial town of 18,000 inhabitants. Founded in the 7th century BC by the Etruscans, it welcomed the Carthaginian general Hannibal during the Second Punic War (216 BC). The latter, seduced by the splendor of the city, ended up "falling asleep in the delights of Capua": after his stay, he suffered several defeats against Rome. Much later, in 841, the old city, located in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, was destroyed by the Saracens, and the "new" Capua was rebuilt along the Volturno river. Its beautiful palaces still testify to its past prosperity.
