Castellammare di Stabia is today an active port with 65,000 inhabitants and an industrial and commercial center with shipyards founded by the Bourbons in the 18th century. The town owes its name to the castle that dominates it, along the Strada Panoramica for Sorrento: castrum ad mare, "castle above the sea", to which was added the toponym of the ancient city of Stabiae. The ancient fortress, whose foundation dates back to the 9th century, has been extensively restored and now hosts private events.
