Next to Amalfi, Atrani might seem more attractive to the traveller in search of authenticity. The village is indeed less touristy than its neighbour. Embedded in the rocky mass and overhanging the sea, it reveals its white and tortuous lanes and its narrow stairs. It was in Atrani that the doges of Amalfi met and that the notables of the Republic lived. The church of San Salvatore di Bireto dates from the 18th century, but its foundations date back to the year 1000. See also the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in baroque style and its medieval portal cast in Constantinople, like that of the Duomo of Amalfi.
