The city's charm comes from this combination of Austrian traditions and Italian culture. While it has long been difficult for Italians and native Austrians to live together, the younger generation is well aware of the opportunities offered by this dual culture. Everyone feels Tyrolean (southern), deliberately "apart". Disputed by the Lombards, Franks and Bavarians, Bolzano, which depended on the Duchy of Trento, was ceded to the Count of Tyrol, then to the Duke of Carinthia and the Dukes of Austria until 1918. In 1927, Bolzano became a provincial capital, and in 1948 was granted autonomy.
