Its fame dates back to the first half of the 19th century, when illustrious clinicians launched the fashion of the grape cure. Its thermal spring is inhabited by a legend. But as early as the 17th century, the Habsburg court had been temporarily transferred to the castle of Merano to escape the epidemic that was ravaging the Inn valley. The Merano valley had long been known for its excellent climatic conditions, as evidenced by the many manor houses and castles of the oldest Tyrolean families. The Kurhaus, the symbol of the town, stands imposingly at the entrance to the historic center. This beautiful Liberty-style building, dated 1874, was designed by Friederich Ohmann. It was once used for thermal treatments and is now a conference center that houses the Puccini Theater. The picturesque alleys are lined with traditional porticoes and the houses have beautiful painted facades and pointed roofs. The Duomo San Nicolo' built between 1310 and 1455, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, is remarkable. Finally, the princely castle, an important testimony of princely architecture in the area, dates back to the 14th century.
